Overview

There are different types of warts, which is important because treatment depends on the type and location of the wart. On one hand, viral warts differ from seborrheic warts (also known as seborrheic keratoses or age warts). Depending on the type, location, and severity of the wart, your dermatologist will choose one of the many available treatment options.

About Viral Warts

What Types of Warts Are There?

There are different types of warts, and knowing the type is important as the treatment depends on the type and location. It's crucial to differentiate between viral warts and seborrheic warts (also known as seborrheic keratoses or age spots). Below is a brief overview of the common types of viral warts:

  • Verrucae vulgares (common warts): Often found on the fingers and hands, these warts are caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV) and are contagious.
  • Mosaic warts: Typically found on the soles of the feet and tend to be widespread.
  • Plantar warts: These warts grow inward into the skin, especially on the soles of the feet, and can be painful.
  • Genital warts (Condylomata acuminata, condylomas): Found in the genital area, these warts are also caused by HPV, commonly transmitted through sexual contact, making them part of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). These warts can often recur, so regular check-ups with a dermatologist are recommended.

How Are Warts Treated?

The treatment of warts depends on the type, location, and extent. Dr. Igor Vujic, a dermatologist in Vienna 1030, often combines several treatment options to achieve the best results. However, up to 30% of cases may experience recurrence since not all viruses can be eliminated by treatment. On the other hand, many warts disappear on their own after a few months.

“Because most warts are caused by viruses, they are contagious. Therefore, early treatment is beneficial.”

Wart Treatment Options

Cryotherapy with Liquid Nitrogen: This involves freezing the warts with extremely cold nitrogen, causing the wart tissue to die. A few treatments spaced 7-14 days apart are usually sufficient.

Wart Tinctures: These topical solutions can be effective, but it may take several weeks to see results. Patients should soften the wart before applying the tincture, remove excess skin (using a wart file), and then apply the treatment.
Laser Wart Treatment: Warts are typically "burned off" using a laser, often under local anesthesia.

Are Warts Contagious?

Yes. Most warts are caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV). The virus can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, but it does not always lead to the formation of warts in the other person.
